Starting with a new pet can bring many questions. Here at Little Critters, we aim to make your journey into jumping spider ownership as smooth and enjoyable as possible. We've compiled answers to some of the most common questions about caring for these amazing invertebrates.

 

What size enclosure does my spider need?
The size of enclosure depends on the size of your spider. Jumping spiders are arboreal which means they like to make their hammocks at the top, for this reason you want to avoid an enclosure that opens at the top, front or side opening is preffered. Generally for i7 and below a 7x7x10cm would be fine, as your spider matures into an adult you may wish to upgrade them into a 12x12x20cm. Putting a small spider into an enclosure thats too big can make hunting trickier for them so this must be monitored to ensure they are actually catching the prey you put in.

 

Do I need a heat mat for my spider?
The Phiddipus Regius Locales come from much warmer climates than the UK. They thrive at temperatures 24 - 28 degrees celcius and will also require regular misting to maintain the humidity of 70 - 80%. Do not place the heat mat touching the enclosure but instead place it at the back of the enclosure at least a few cm away and always use with a thermostat.

 

Does my spider need a water bowl?
No, your spider does not need a water bowl as this can pose a serious drowning risk. Instead regular misting is plenty, ensure there are visible water droplets on the enclosure after misting, they will also get some of their hydration from the prey they eat.

 

Is the light in the room enough for a spider to hunt?
Your spider will need a bright white LED desk light for your spider to enable its ability to hunt as they as sight hunters. This light should be on for 12 hours and off for 12 numbers to give your spider the day / night cycle.
